Introduction
Woodblock printing is a traditional technique used to create artistic prints by carving images into wooden blocks. This method has been employed for centuries, particularly in East Asia, to produce intricate designs on paper and fabric.
Woodblock printing is a specialised art form that combines creativity with craftsmanship.

Woodblock Printing Process
There are a number of steps usually taken to create a woodblock print. First, the artist sketches their design on paper, which is often "rice" paper due to its absorbant quality. The artist then transfers the design onto the woodblock using carbon paper or by drawing directly.
Using carving tools, like a chisel, the artist then removes areas on the block of wood to bring out the design. The artist applies a thin layer of ink onto the block using a brayer. Paper is carefully placed over the inked block. Using a baren, pressure is applied evenly across the paper. The paper is gently peeled away from the wood block to reveal the image.
