The book, "The Old Man and the Sea", published in 1952 as a novella by Ernest Hemingway and tells the story of Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who has gone 84 days without catching a fish.

Determined to prove his skill and break his unlucky streak, he sets out alone into the Gulf Stream and hooks a massive marlin.

What follows is a gruelling, multi-day struggle between the old man and the powerful fish, testing Santiago’s strength, endurance, and spirit.

Though he eventually succeeds in catching the marlin, sharks attack during his return journey and devour the prized catch.

Despite returning with only the skeleton, Santiago earns deep respect from the villagers and reclaims a sense of personal triumph and dignity.

The novella is a powerful meditation on resilience, pride, and the nobility of struggle.

The book was adapted into a movie by Warner Bros. in 1958, starring Spencer Tracy as Santiago.

"The Old Man and the Sea" was first published in the U.S.A. by Charles Scribner & Sons. It was the last major work of fiction by Hemingway that was published during his lifetime.
