Isaac Asimov (2 January 1920 – 6 April 1992) was an American science fiction writer.
He is a multi-award winner who authored many books but is best known for the “Foundation” series or “The Foundation Trilogy”, including:
- “Foundation”, published as a book in 1951;
- “Foundation and Empire” (1952); and
- “Second Foundation” (1953)
Two sequels:
- “Foundation's Edge” (1982); and
- “Foundation and Earth” (1986); and
two prequels:
- “Prelude to Foundation” (1988); and
- “Forward the Foundation” (1993),
were added to the series.
The premises of the Foundation series revolves around the end days of a futuristic Galactic Empire.
Asimov also wrote the Galactic Empire series (or Empire Trilogy) consisting of:
- “Pebble in the Sky” (1950)
- “The Stars, Like Dust” (1951)
- “The Currents of Space” (1952)
The Foundation series and Galactic Empire series are loosely connected but should be considered complete stories in their own right.

- A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
- A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
