For Whom the Bell Tolls | Ernest Hemingway

Ernest Miller Hemingway (21 July 1899 – 2 July 1961) was an American novelist, short-story writer and journalist. Recognised as one of the most influential writers of the 20th-century.

 

Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.  And received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953.

 

He served in WW1 as an ambulance driver and then as a war correspondent.

 

His debut novel, “The Sun Also Rises”, was published in 1926.

 

Hemingway then wrote “A Farewell to Arms”, published in 1929.

 

Hemingway was on secondment as a war correspondent for the Spanish Civil War in around 1937. Those experiences are said to have formed the backbone for his novel, “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, which was written in Havana, Cuba and published in 1940.

 

In 1952, Hemingway wrote “The Old Man and the Sea”, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

 

He died by suicide at his home in Idaho, USA, in 1961.

The Reprint Society Limited

 

The Reprint Society Ltd was established by Alan John Bott in the United Kingdom in 1939. It traded as “World Books”.

 

Alan Bott also founded “Pan Books”, which is now part of the British-based Macmillan Publishers.

 

The Reprint Society Ltd aimed to provide broad access to books for the public. People could join World Books as a member and obtain discounts on a range of books. Its heyday was in the 1950s.

 

The Reprint Society Ltd were also known to sell a range of “Buckram Bindings” – comprising high quality boards made of stiff cotton, linen, or horsehair cloth. Making the books very durable.

 

In 1966, the company was acquired by a joint partnership between W.H. Smith and Doubleday. It was renamed “Book Club Associates” which subsequently traded using a number of different club names, but still also continuing to use World Books.

 

Book Club Associates as an entity was liquidated in 2012.
