The author, Neville Cardus (1888 to 1975) CBE was an English writer, crtic and cricket correspondent.  This book, written in 1956, focuses on English cricket including commentary on English county cricket, such as, Yorkshire, Surrey and Gloucestershire. The author also delves into some of England's famous cricketers of the time, like:- Jack Hobbs, Herbert Sutcliffe, Walter Hammond, Alec Bedser, and others.
