Stephen William Hawking (8 January 1942 – 14 March 2018) was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author, and Professor at the University of Cambridge.

In 1963, at age 21, Hawking was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, which over several decades caused significant ongoing paralysis.

Despite this health setback, Hawking is regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists in history. His work helping to understand the origins and structure of the universe, from the Big Bang to black holes.
